About the A.B. in Ecology: Science Communication
Science communication is the main way the general public learns about scientific discoveries and environmental and ecological issues: few people read published scientific articles directly. Therefore, communication of science, in written format, documentary and film, art and design, or oral storytelling, is critical for informing public decision-making and environmental policy.
The coursework associated with an AB degree in Ecology is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the science behind environmental and ecological issues. Beyond this course-related content knowledge, many of these courses in the Odum School of Ecology provide students the opportunity to develop skills needed to translate scientific knowledge out to the general public. For those interested in careers in science communication, additional coursework through a Minor or Certificate (see list below) can expand on the scientific knowledge and communication skills gained within AB in Ecology coursework. Indeed, many students have written great science communication pieces through courses, conferences, and internships.
