A paper coauthored by Jeb Byers was covered in the journal Nature Climate Change. “‘Caribbean Creep’ chills out: climate change and marine invasive species,” by João Canning Clode et al., recently published in PLoS ONE, describes the detrimental effects of severe cold temperatures on the green porcelain crab, a tropical species that has invaded southeastern U.S. coastal waters as ocean temperatures have risen. The researchers found that periodic cold snaps may limit the range expansion of invaders from the tropics, and should be taken into account in future predictions about species invasions.
