Athens, Ga. –  University of Georgia professor Pejman Rohani and alumnus Shuijin Hu are among a group of distinguished scientists elected Fellows of the Ecological Society of America in 2021, the organization announced today. ESA Fellows are chosen for their outstanding contributions to ecological research and discovery, communication, education and pedagogy, and management and policy. They are elected for life.

Pejman Rohani, Regents’ Professor and Georgia Athletic Association Professor in Ecology and Infectious Diseases, was elected in recognition of his use of “long-term spatio-temporal epidemiological data to test and examine ecological theory, while simultaneously applying ecological concepts and perspectives to enhance understanding of transmission dynamics and improve human health,” according to an announcement from ESA. Rohani holds a joint appointment in the Odum School of Ecology and the College of Veterinary Medicine’s department of infectious diseases and a courtesy faculty appointment in the UGA Institute of Bioinformatics. He is the tenth current or emeritus Odum School faculty member to be so honored.

Shuijin Hu, who received his doctorate in ecology from UGA in 1994 and is a professor of entomology and plant pathology at North Carolina State University, was elected for “influential research in the fields of plant–microbe interactions, ecosystem ecology and global change ecology, and for his dedication to pedagogy.”
