Ecology alumna Huda Alkaff, the founder and director of the grassroots environmental justice organization Wisconsin Green Muslims, was named a recipient of the third annual Catalyst Award. The award is given by Rachel’s Network, a nonprofit environmental funding organization that supports women environmental leaders.

The Catalyst Award recognizes “women leaders of color for their commitment to a healthy planet,” according to the press release announcing the recipients. The award includes a cash prize as well as networking opportunities and public recognition.

Alkaff, an educator and ecologist, received a master’s of science degree in conservation ecology and sustainable development (MS CESD; now the MS in Intergrative Conservation and Sustainability, or ICAS, program) from the University of Georgia in 1997. She has been recognized for her work by Environment America, the Sierra Club Great Waters Group, the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education, and the White House, among many others.
