Athens, Ga. – Nine Odum School of Ecology researchers were among at least 28 from the University of Georgia who presented their work at the 2019 Ecological Society of America annual meeting at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Ky., from Aug. 11-16. This year’s meeting was held jointly with the U.S. Society for Ecological Economics. Its theme was “Bridging Communities and Ecosystems: Inclusion as an Ecological Imperative.”
Besides the Odum School, UGA units and affiliated centers represented at the meeting include the departments of plant biology and entomology, the College of Engineering, College of Veterinary Medicine, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and the Joseph W. Jones Center at Ichauway. Presenters also include at least 19 UGA ecology alumni, former postdoctoral associates and visiting scholars.
The range of topics covered in their presentations showcased the depth and breadth of ecological research happening at UGA today. They include talks and posters on topics as varied as nutrient cycling in freshwater streams, how habitat choice shapes host susceptibility and disease burden, how soil hydrology influences woodland-grassland transitions in the Serengeti, changes in nitrogen fixation following disturbance in forest ecosystems, and the role of botanical gardens in environmental education. A complete list of UGA presenters is below.
The Odum School hosted an alumni mixer in Grand Ballroom C of the Galt House Hotel, immediately adjacent to the convention center, from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12. All UGA alumni, students, and current and former faculty, staff, postdocs, and friends of UGA ecology were invited to attend.

With more than 9,000 members, ESA is the largest community of ecologists in the world, and one of the oldest–this year’s annual meeting is its 104th. ESA has strong ties to UGA: five of the organization’s past presidents have been UGA faculty members, and eight current or former faculty members are ESA Fellows.
