Discover Life is partnering with National Moth Week, which takes place from July 19-27 this year, to raise awareness about moths and their ecological significance.
Discover Life is an interactive website developed by Odum School Associate Professor John Pickering that allows people from across the world to contribute data about all manner of living things by uploading digital photographs that become part of an online encyclopedia of biodiversity.
To kick off National Moth Week, Discover Life is hosting an early morning moth party at the Moth Observatory at Walker Hall at the Sandy Creek Nature Center in Athens from 4:00 to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19.
Discover Life is also providing online photo albums to registered National Moth Week participants so they can easily share observations and compare findings across sites. The uploaded information from the albums will be integrated with other data to provide a comparison of the diversity and seasonality of species.
According to the Discover Life web site, “Our goals are to enjoy moths, better understand and manage ecological communities, and teach science and environmental awareness in the process.”
