Best Student Paper Award (Graduate)

The Odum School of Ecology is soliciting papers for the annual Best Student Paper competition. Recognition will be given in two categories: basic/theoretical ecology and applied ecology. Recognition will be for the paper judged to be the best published in each category during the preceding year by an Odum School of Ecology graduate student.

All ecology graduate students enrolled in a UGA graduate program at the time of submission are eligible; however for students in the M.S. degree program, papers can be submitted up to one year following the student's graduation date. Persons submitting manuscripts must be the sole author or senior author if it is a multi-authored paper. Verification of the applicant's contribution may be asked of the co-authors. Papers must be accepted for publication by a peer-reviewed journal, book, or book chapter and submitted in published form or, if not yet published, in the final revision accepted for publication. Documentation of manuscript acceptance is required. Institutional affiliation (the Odum School of Ecology, the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, the Joseph Jones Ecological Research Center, or the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory) of the author must be identified in published papers or papers accepted for publication.

Each applicant must include a paragraph on what he/she thinks is important about the submitted paper and what impact it might have on the field of study. Papers will be judged on the basis of originality, experimental sophistication, application to ecological principles, level of effort, and potential impact. There will be NO deadline waivers. Applicants should consider carefully BEFORE application, which category their papers belong in.

All entries must be received by 5 p.m. on April 1st to Katherine Adams (ktswings@uga,edu). Materials should be compacted into one pdf. document. Only one entry per person.

There will be two awards--one in each category--of $200 and a certificate. The funds are not available until August and the recipient must be enrolled during that time.

To be considered for the award, the nomination packet should include:

  1. A letter of submission addressed to awards committee indicating the category of the paper (either theoretical/basic or applied) and importance of paper (see paragraph above);
  2. A copy of the paper;
  3. A brief (1-2) page CV.
